How to Make a Major Definite Purpose & Achieve Goals Like Bruce Lee

Major Definite Purpose Definite Chief Aim Bruce Lee

To achieve your major goal, the first step is to write down your major definite purpose also known as definite chief aim. This will require no major skill or knowledge form your part and if you were to do what is mentioned in this post, you will see most things you set out to do materialize. This is the central idea in Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich. It is easy for your major definite purpose to become nothing more than wishful thinking. To avoid this, the idea of Major Definite Purpose has been adapted in this post to ensure that you have a process that will help you see concrete results.

What is Major Definite Purpose or Definite Chief Aim

When men first come into contact with crime, they abhor it. If they remain in contact with crime for a time, they become accustomed to it, and endure it. If they remain in contact with it long enough, they finally embrace it, and become influenced by it. Any stimulus of thought which is repeatedly sent to the subconscious mind is finally accepted and acted upon by it. Writing down your major definite purpose and reading it aloud twice daily, will influence your subconscious mind in a similar way and will create a burning desire that you require to achieve your goals. A lot of people set goals but few see their goals materialize. This is because they live their lives passively taking anything that comes their way. Creating a definite chief aim is a way to trick your subconscious into having the right mental process to achieve your goals. Your major definite purpose is a very specific statement which has the power to influence your subconscious mind. Your burning desire will in turn will force you to take daily action that moves you towards attaining your goal.

How to Make Your Major Definite Purpose

To create your major definite purpose, follow the steps below:

Step 1 – Determine Your Specific Desire

Determine exactly what you desire being as specific as possible. You can never have a burning desire for something vague. Wanting to be rich is vague, but wanting to make a million dollars is being specific. Wanting to lose weight is vague, wanting a 30 inch waist line is being specific.

Step 2 – Establish The End Date

Establish a date by which you want to acquire or achieve this thing that you desire. It is important to be realistic. The time period should be long enough for your goal or desire to be achievable but short enough for you to find it worth pursuing.

Step 3 – Determine The Price

Determine what you are willing to give in return for this thing that you desire. You have to pay a price for the object of your desire and you have to pay it in full before you get it. You never get something for nothing and the definite chief aim prepares you to pay the price as and when it is necessary. If you want to be a millionaire, you need to create the necessary value in return for the money. If you want to get in shape you have to put in the necessary work and follow a proper diet plan. Regardless of what your desire, there is a price you have to pay for it.

Step 4 – Make An Imperfect Plan

Make a definite plan that will help you realize this desire and put this plan into action immediately, whether you are ready or not. Your plan need not be concrete. You just need to start somewhere, so come up with whatever plan you can think of. Note that you just need a place to start and direction to work towards. You don’t need a well laid out elaborate plan.  Your plan will evolve in your subconscious and you will think of various different plans at a later date as you start having a burning desire.

Step 5 – Write A Concise Statement

Write the results of the above four steps in a concise statement. It must include what you desire, what you are going to give in return for your object of desire, along with the time limit and the plan with which you intend to acquire this object of your desire. Remember to write down the date when you wrote it down along with your name or signature. This concise statement is your major definite purpose or definite chief aim.

Step 6 – Reading Your Major Definite Purpose

Read this concise statement twice daily, once after waking up and once before going to sleep. When you read this statement, see and believe that the object of your desire is waiting to be transferred to you as and when you deliver the service/work you have committed to render in return for it in step 3. Reading it aloud is intended to condition your subconscious mind to develop a burning desire by making you constantly think about it.

Step 7 – Changing Your Identity

Repeat the daily reading of your major definite purpose until you start taking consistent daily action that moves you towards your end goal. Every day, if you are doing something that moves you towards your goal, your definite chief aim has become part of your identity. You can continue to read your major definite purpose daily if you wish to do that, but I generally revisit my definite chief aim less frequently when I reach this stage. A lot of us get stuck in the planning phase without taking action. It is vital that you put your plan into action and you make progress towards your goal everyday through execution of your plan.

More Than One Major Definite Purpose

Having more than one major definite purpose will reduce its power to influence your sub-conscious mind. Plans for acquiring the object of your desire might change but the object of your desire should not. To identify the object of your desire ask yourself what fulfills you the most and identify the object of your desire accordingly. You can have multiple other goals but only one major definite purpose.

System to Apply Your Major Definite Purpose to Your Life

We looked at what a major definite purpose is, how it works  and how to make one. With this information you will be able to create your own definite chief aim and apply it to achieve your major goal. However you will need to effectively absorb this into your life to see all the benefits. Without that, your major definite purpose will just become something you wrote and forgot about. You need a system to incorporate this into your life, which we will cover in this section.

Where to Go From Here

It is highly recommended that you read the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, which is where the concept of the major definite purpose first came from. Creating a definite chief aim alone is not enough. I would highly recommend that you proceed with reading How to Write a Diary ā€“ A Life Changing Keystone Habit. Writing a diary will help you form and stick to your habits and thereby achieve your goals. This is critical in making your definite chief aim a reality. Let us know what your major definite purpose is in the comments section below, so you can inspire others to make their own definite chief aim and take action.

  2. Thank you very much for simplified teachings the law of success.
Is it advisable to set a definite chief aim for about three months and thereafter set another definite chief aim?
    Thanks

    • I would think if your definite chief aim is achievable in 3 months, it is not big enough. Usually, the definite chief aim should seem unrealistic and unachievable in your current circumstances. You make that your life purpose, meaning you think and breathe it every day making success inevitable. The reason why most people fail to realize their dreams is because they only chase the things they want when they feel like it or when they feel motivated. But the people who succeed are those who think about their dreams every day.

However, this article needs updating. It is very easy for your chief aim to become nothing more than wishful thinking. To avoid this, you should break it down into smaller goals like the 3 months goals you mentioned. Once you do that, you should create habits that will help you make daily progress towards achieving these mini-goals. I recommend you read this ā€“ https://ofpad.com/how-to-form-a-habit/ article. If you make pursuing your goals a habit, you end up achieving your definite chief aim in the long run.

For example, if you want to be a best selling author of a book, it is a no brainer that you need to write books. But if you want to be an author today and a celebrity chief tomorrow and a mixed martial arts champion the day after, then you are not going to get anywhere with your book. This is the problem most people face and your definite chief aim is the first step making you focus all your energy and efforts into one thing. Only after that can you set sub-goals. In the best selling author example, your sub goals will be something like create a plot, create character back story and things like that. These are sub-goals that help you achieve your chief aim of becoming a best selling author. Then you create a habit to write 30 minutes every day. With time you will have your book done. Your first book might not take you to the best seller list, but repeat the process enough number of times and you hone your skill and you increase your chances. Irrespective of what the actual end outcome is, you will be much better off than the person who wants many different things but ended up doing nothing.

I will update this article in a few weeks to help increase clarity.

Let me know if this clarifies.

    • Thank you Ofpad for response to my question. Iā€™m very satisfied with the clarity and detailed explanation relative to my question. Eventually, I have found a mentor from a far.

  3. Think and grow rich gives a platform for your whole life. I eneded up on this page with the aim to find out how to write one for my self, and oh boy, I am happy I did. I am happy I read about Bruce Lee story. I knew he was using the principles but I did not made the connection to Think and Grow Rich. Having such figure to remind me what is possible to achieve when one moves with a definite purpouse gives me so much motivation and faith in my self.

  4. I was wondering if you could tell me if my definite chief aim is specific enough… I, Kobe, will make $10,000,000 by my 26th birthday through online businesses while inspiring, motivating, and helping the youth. I will also find inner peace, happiness, and freedom to live the life I want… I wasn’t sure if I should find a specific online business or if that was ok. Thanks!

    • Hi Kobe,

Yes. It is specific enough. However, you can tweak it when you do decide on something. The whole point of having a major definite purpose is to have an unwavering focus on one particular thing. Don’t make the mistake of jumping from one thing to the next.

    • Hi Boniface,

The main aim of having a major definite purpose is to have a single minded focus on one thing, making it your life’s purpose. This will help you focus your energy to achieve that one thing instead of chasing multiple different things in life. So instead of trying to achieve 3 different things by 2022, focus on just one (preferably the easiest to achieve). You can take up the other two, after you have achieved the first one.

An imperfect plan is missing from your major definite purpose. You need to make one. It can be to raise capital or anything which is the next step that takes you forward in achieving a particular goal. Once you make the perfect plan you need to put it into action immediately.

  7. *Definite chief purpose*

I’ll have in my possession GhĀ¢ 200,000.00 by 31st December, 2023. I’ll accumulate this money through the profits i generate by running a shop for selling electrical accessories and providing mobile money vending services.

    In return,
I’ll pay my monthly tithe regularly.
I’ll give out 50% of my monthly salary I get from the employment I get.
I’ll give out 25% of all income I get outside my employment.
I’ll pay whoever works with and for me in full and on time.

    Plan.
    1. I’ll find out the cost of buying materials and workmanship for a welder to put up a container for me. Once that is done, I’ll start saving to raise the capital needed while I convince the welder the commence welding together the container.
    2. Look for a good location to put my container. Ask my Dad to assist me in getting a suitable location for the business.
    3. Get two persons (a guy and a lady) to be the salesman. They should have good skills in maintaining customers and should be welcoming.
    4. I’ll get one person who is confident and convincing enough to go to various construction sites to present to them a proposal for supplying electrical accessories at a cool price.

    Wat of this?

  8. Boniface. Focus on the 20% that will bring you 80% of what you seek. Your statement is a work in progress. You will know its the perfect statement when you no longer seek to get validation from others. I would advise this, make it very accurate, brief and concise (ABC). What you have here is a plan rather than a definitive chief purpose. As Ofpad advises, focus on 1 thing right now (that will bring you 80% of what you seek). This brings you closer to your ultimate goal of a successful businessman. Take action & create good habits (example: every morning ask yourself “what action do I need to take today that will take me closer to my goal”). All these little actions, done consistently through good habits will eventually amount to your success. Good luck brother

  9. Hi, What Do You Think About This Statement Is , Any Changes You Would Suggest?
I, AA, will have in my possession 333,000,000 T by the 1st day of Farvardin 1399, which will come to me in various amounts from time to time during the interim. In return for this money i will give the most valuable service of which i am capable, rendering the fullest possible quantity, and the best possible quality of service in the capacity of a creative android developer and entrepreneur.
I will become one of the top creative android developers and one of the most successful, wealthy and famous entrepreneurs of my country and use my creative ideas to develop and market highly useful and valuable android applications selling anywhere from 1 to 10 million or more to my loving customers.
I believe that i will have this money in my possession. My faith is so strong that i can now see this money before my eyes. I can touch it with my hands. It is now awaiting transfer to me at the time, and in the proportion that i deliver the service i intend to render in return for it. I am awaiting a plan by which to accumulate this money, and i will follow that plan immediately, when it is received.”

I copied the example from Think And Grow Rich and made some changes, Is this okay or is there anything I should change?
By the way, I also want to ask if this is realistic, this goal is for 20 Month from now, I have some background in java programming but no knowledge or experience in android development, but if I can discipline myself and work with persistence, Will I be able to earn this money in less than 2 years. This money is equivalent to about 100,000.00 Dollars. I don’t know what you can buy with 100,000 dollars in america, but it’s worth a lot in my country, and I’ve calculated everything I want to buy and have by that time and come up with that specific number.

  10. Does this work if the goal is not money? My goals mostly involve the person I am now vs the person I want to be, and I am not sure how to be specific with that.

    Reply
    • Think of the identity of the person you want to be. If you don’t know what identity you want to form, identify a person who you look up to in the real world. Someone who you want to be like or someone whose success you want to emulate. Your goal can be to have the same or similar level of success as your role mode. The things you will do in return for this success can be things they did to achieve thier level of success. For example if you want to be a better basket ball player. You have Kobe Bryant as a role model and try to achieve similar level of success. To become like Kobe you train and practice like Kobe.

Hope this helps you come up with a specific definite chief aim. The goal itself is irrelevant. It is simply there to provide you with a direction. Build your identity and you are on the road to success. The goal of finding success is different for each person. Success does not have to equal money or riches. But a funny thing happens on the road to success, money usually follows you around.

      Hope this helped.

  14. Hope this thread is open because I find it very useful and would like to get a feedback on my definite purpose formula I paid down after reading NH.
    My definite chief aim:
I believe I came to this world to help children suffering some sort of poverty (like education) in the remotest part of the world. For this purpose I will create a foundation In 2020 with objective to help at least 2M children by 2025. In return, I will do my very best as entrepreneur, by raising funds for my startup of at least 100M $ by 2025 and grow it with at least 2M customers progressively during the same period.
I will live the life I desire, in harmony with my self, my loved ones and the whole world.

    Your comments are welcome.

    • Hi Sal,

What are the steps you are going to take in 2020 that will get you moving towards realizing this major definite purpose?

  15. Hi Abhishek,
    Steps are:

    – define a more detailed project scope
    – put together a core team
    – create the company
    – define a first small pilot in one specific area (say education) and geo (say Jaipur in India)
    – execute the pilot

My doubt was more on what to give in return.. what is the link with the DCA .. in my case I obviously want to succeed with the startup but also believe I can learn on how to build a new org, fundraising etc… and when I exit it I have enough money to dedicate 100% to the humanitarian project, full speed…

    Would that be ok?

    • Hi Sal,

Major definite purpose and chief aim are the same thing.

Major definite purpose is usually made for people who know what they want but dont have clarity of how they will achieve it and what it will cost them to achieve it.

In your case you have clarity of both what you want, what you will do to get what you want and how you will get what you want. This understanding is good enough and all you need to do now is execute on your plan this year.

Let me know if this clarifies.

  16. It does Abhishek.. thank you
when I was talking about link with chief aim I was more referring to the service you give in return in order to get the chief aim. While I see in my description a link between the two, sometime I doubt that I am pursuing two ambitious goals in parallel, even though I have clear in my mind what is the life purpose and what its subgoal

    Thanks again

    Reply
    • The service you give in return is nothing but the things you will do to achieve your goal. So in your case it is the list of things you plan to do that will move you forward towards achieving your purpose.

Think of the purpose as a general theme for your life. The individual sub goals are the finer details to achieve your purpose.

As long as you have realistic timelines, it is not ambitious.

      Are you from Jaipur?

  17. By the first day of january 2021. I have in my possession $10,000,000 usd cash, which comes to me in various amounts from time to time during the interim.

In return for this money I give the most efficient service of which I am capable, rendering the fullest possible quantity, and the best possible quality of service in the capacity of a sales and marketing executive, internet marketer, real estate & credit professional, and business expert.

I believe that I have this money in my possession. My faith is so strong that I see this money before my eyes. I touch it with my hands. It is awaiting transfer to me, and in the proportion that I deliver the service I render in return for it.

I am so happy and grateful that money and sales come to me effortlessly in increasing amounts, from multiple sources, on a consistent basis.

    • Hi Sean,

Do you already have a plan to make this happen? What are the steps you are going to take this year to achieve your goal?

Also have you already built momentum towards achieving this? If you are starting from zero and haven’t built momentum towards your goal, then it would be better to have less aggressive timelines.

  18. Thanks for your kind answer. I recall you saying in some earlier post that you would update the article by talking about how to split the chief aim in mĆŗltiple subgoals.. can you send the link if you have already done it..
In my case, like others, there are many subgoals to be pursued some of those might be done in parallel.. e.g. while I develop my current tech startup, and accumulate money to be put progressively on the foundation, I would need to do practical steps to finalize the humanitarian project, build a team, open the company etc.. at the beginning I would dedicate say 70% of the time to my current job and make it to 0 after the exit.. any advise on how to manage this without losing line of sight?
    Thanks again

  19. Iā€™m stock on writing my chief of aim and having my vision board. I know clearly based from my past, what is primary for me now is ā€œpeace of mindā€. Before achieving any materialistic goal. My first goal is focus long on the specific way and method to rebuild my subconscious mind, by understanding the fruit of the spirit, having complete inner peace of mind.
Therefore, my purpose is Peace, Love, Joy, Happiness, Success and Prosperity. I donā€™t know where to start with my chief of aim.

  20. It’s difficult for me to say without knowing your exact situation. You can however find the root of things by recursively asking the question why.

So you first start by asking why you are losing your peace of mind. You may list a few things. Then you ask why those things affect you so much. You will get more reasons. You repeat the question why till you cannot go any deeper. Once you are at the root you will hopefully have clarity on where to start.

I know this is a bit generalized but without knowing a lot about your specific situation this is the only thing I can think of to help. You can open a topic in the “General discussion” section in our community ofpad.com/community if you want to provide more details.

  25. I really appreciated reading this. I am currently reading NH original course The Law of Success. I plan to complete it by end of year. I am studying it not just reading it. As I read the section on DCA Iam wrestling with clarity. I have been working on this for years and I am seriously conflicted and I think that is diluting my efforts. My DCA is very specific and is a calling. It is not directly connected to money.

My DCA is to speak, teach and inspire people to live the life they were born to live. The message I carry in my soul is to help people realize who they are in light of the creator.

So I landed on this site because I have known this for 30 years, but I am wrestling with how do you do this when life doesn’t consist of one thing. I have a family I have to support. I’m not totally interested in earning millions doing my DCA. I want a few millions for very practical reasons, like food, shelter, charity, retirement and legacy.

I am battling with combining my business (which is not my DCA) but a business I enjoy because I can make a lot of money helping people. But it’s not really the place I see me living out my DCA.

So can you help me figure out how do I combine multiple life roles (husband, father, businessman, teacher,) with my DCA and not feel like I am diluting my energy and motivation.

Your comments about execution speak to me because I am stuck and really not knowing how to move forward. I know the mechanics, it’s the desire and clarity I am seeking the help with.

    Can you help

    Reply
    • Your DCA need not be about making money although it must be specific enough like for example “change the life of 100K people in a measurable way”.

Every person who has ever made a DCA has had the same circumstance you are facing right now. Bruce Lee, for example, had a family too and by pursuing his DCA he did not become a bad father or husband. You can have a multi-dimensional life with many aspects and that is in fact recommended to make your life fulfilling. A person can have a billion dollars but it won’t be fulfilling if he doesn’t have love or connection.

The DCA is not the only aim in your life. It is just the CHIEF AIM or MAJOR PURPOSE in your life. Typically your DCA is a goal that is impossible to achieve if you don’t think about it every day. This is a goal that you must take baby steps towards every day or every week. You want to always remember it and your life choices will be dictated by it. This should be something that gives your life purpose and meaning.

Take Elon Musk for example. He has had a string of affairs and last time I checked he has fathered 7 children with different women. He has even had an affair with Amber Heard when she was married to Johnny Depp. He tweets about everything under the sun and gets involved in a ton of needless controversy. For an average person, this would all be a distraction and using your words it must dilute his energy and motivation a lot. But ever since he was young he has thought going to Mars and renewable energy are the two most important problems to solve for. When he made $100 million from his stake from PayPal, he invested 100% of it in his two new companies and had to borrow money from friends for his daily expenses at a point in time. He wasnt driven by money but by the vision he believed in. He took extremely hard steps that were extremely risky and painful for him physically, emotionally and financially because he beleived in his purpose and it kept him moving forward. Now he is the richest man on the planet.

So all your DCA has to be is something you never lose track of ever. No matter what other distractions you have in life and no matter how painful it is to do it. You don’t ever want to be a robot only obsessing about DCA and nothing else.

Hope this helped and answered your question

  26. Yes. I am pouring over your reply for the nuggets that I need to pull.

Your making me rethink my DCA, not in substance but the articulation of it. Am I being clear to myself about what it is I am to do and how am I to go about doing it?

How do your not lose track if the desire and drive are fading?

I think there needs to be some reigniting of my DCA and connecting on another level with myself.

    Thanks,

You and this site are being medicine at this point in my life.

    • Don’t worry Edward. You don’t have to have all the answers from the very beginning. You can refine your purpose with time. What is important is you have a general direction to work towards and take small baby steps every day or every week. You may not get where you want to go overnight but you will get there eventually.

At the end of the day it is the journey not the destination that matters. Who you become on the inside matters more than what you have on the outside. A billionaire becomes a billionaire not because of his bank balance but because of his mindset. How? If you take his billion dollars away, he will find a way to make it all back again. Look at the number of billionaires who became bankrupt multiple times only to become billionaires again. Donald Trump comes to mind. At the same time if you give an average joe a billion dollars he will end up worse than what he was before he got the money. Look at everyone who ever won the lottery and see how they ended up. So what makes a person wealthy is who he is on the inside. You can apply this to your non financial DCA as well. Who should you become on the inside so that your life on the outside aligns with what you want. Your DCA is there to remind you and slowly align your inner self to who you want to be on the outside.

  27. I really love this write-up. Definitiveness of goal is actually the first step in achieving success. So many people don’t really know what they want in their own personal pursuits.
