3986+2789=6775 digit sum=7
however 6874 also got the same digit sum as the correct answer even though it is wrong
can someone explain please?

Hey Faruuq,
Digit sum can only verify your answer with 90% accuracy.
If you want a higher level of accuracy you can use the DS method in conjunction with the DD method. However even that is not 100%.
The only way to be 100% sure your answer is correct, is to do the calculation again.

6874 has the same digit sum as 6775 because 6874 = 6874 – 99. In fact, they have the same digit difference because the difference is a multiple of 11.
